Friday Finds – Some of What I Have Learned This Week from Black Influencers and Creatives

Happy weekend! I wanted to share a few discoveries from my past week of learning about and from black creatives.

Amira Rahim Art: Given how well known this amazing artist is, I am surprised that I just found out about her. She makes the brightest abstract pieces, and when she is not doing that, she teaches others how to sell their art to make a living.

What an amazing feed with such beautiful work!

Shekudo: founded by Akudo Iheakanwa and Shetu Bimpong in Australia and now in Nigeria, Shekudo focuses on sustainable fashion. They use local artisans and materials, including recycled insoles. I have my eye on these. And $15 shopping to the U.S.A. through June.

My top pick here

Perryn Ryan: Based in Brooklyn with a background in the fashion industry, Perryn’s work shows her spirituality and connectivity to the world. She sites Picasso as an inspiration. Shop her work here .

Glographics: Although it is not the responsibility of black people to teach white people during this time, Glo’s posts have taught me so much already. Find her at @glographics and here .

Hear our voices digital protest: Influencers and creators Gabby Mbeki @gabbymbeki, Bethany Everett @twentysomethingplus, Claudiane Philippe @cphilipp , Anaise Prince @anaiseprince and Brittanny Taylor @brittanny created a safe space for those concerned about protesting in crowds during the pandemic by holding a Black Lives Matter virtual protest on June 9 where they shared their stories. I was very emotional to watch, and I felt lucky to be able to attend. We made signs to display at the end, and we all held them up at the same time. And, in 48 hours, they raised over $11,000 for Black Lives Matter from the donations from the event! You can watch it here .

Brené Brown podcast with guest Austin Channing Brown. My sister Marni sent me this to listen to, and it was such a valuable conversation that I need to listen to it again. One thing that struck me the most was the conversation on black Jesus v white Jesus.! I won’t spoil it. Just listen!

Venita Aspen and Sophie Gold have done two IG live chats about relevant Black Lives Matter topics, and they are must watches. You can ask questions or add a comment/emoji. They have been holding them on Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. Eastern, 5:30 p.m. Pacific, and there is another one this Tuesday, June 16.

Bianca Garcia wrote about voter suppression, has a document with links for justice. America needs to do better.

This video that Jazmine Scott took of her precious children destroyed me. Regardless of your political views, I hope that you agree that no mother should ever have to show her children a video of someone being murdered the way that George Floyd was because it should never happen.

I realize this is a heavy ending to this post, but I want to share. Please stick with me! I have a fun little trip coming this week!

Xx, Jen @preppyfrancophile
