New York Sister Visit – Saturday in Rye, Scarsdale and Hartsdale

Two weekends ago, I visited my sister and brother in law in White Plains.  As is the Fogelson tradition, we hit the ground running and maximized our time.

First stop was Rye.  What an adorable town center!  We hit Rosemary & Vine, a scrumptious vegetarian restaurant.  I had a delicious dinner egg white frittata and my sister had a vegetable tagine over couscous.  After lunch, we walked around town. There was a beautiful gazebo, which was a memorial for the 9/11 victims of the town of Rye.The residents of Rye love a good gourmet store.  There were two!

Good thing there aren’t flowers like this in near me, or I would be broke!Next stop was Scarsdale.  We hit the village, which has some really old, fascinating architecture.  Parts of it looked like a European town! And there were TWO patasseries.  I wish you could smell how good La Renaissance smelled!  Buttery pastry smell. There was also a great French store with a little French lady who owned it, but we didn’t get a lot of snaps because she was literally breathing down our necks. We headed home for a rest/nap to recharge for some Italian food.

The place in Hartsdale that my sister and brother-in-law recently discovered, Buon Amici, was a bustling Italian Restaurant with every table full at 8:00 p.m.  Their menu was traditional Italian dishes- park, cacciatore, etc.  But then our server came over to tell us the specials, and there were at least 15 appetizers and 15 entrees not on the menu.

I chose two specials- the strawberry pear salad and the seafood with squid ink pasta. The salad was average- it would have been better or spinach, but the salad dressing- a stramberry gorgonzola, was delicious! I have kept my pasta consumption to a minimum due to my dietary changes, but I couldn’t resist house made squid ink pasta!  And there was so much seafood in there that I filled up on it as opposed to the pasta.I wasn’t ready for dessert, but we soldiered on to Village Creamery in Valhalla.  They had frozen cookie dough!   And candy!  And delicious ice cream flavors.Such an action packed day!  And, as I say to my boyfriend, a “not-on-the-plan” day of indulgence.  Everyone needs one or two on occasion!

Stay tuned for more food and sights on Day 2.
